The German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents said that during the first year of life, the infant should not sleep in the parents’ bed, but rather in a bed of his own in the parents’ bedroom, in order to protect him from the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
The association added that the infant should also wear a sleeping bag suitable for him and sleep on a solid and flat mattress, without any other things such as pillows, quilts and dolls, in order to avoid exposing the infant’s body to excessive heat, as well as to avoid the exposure of the child to suffocation by slipping under these things.
The association stressed that the sleeping position on the back is safer for the infant than the sleeping position on the stomach or on the side.
The association stressed the need to call an ambulance urgently, if one of the parents notices the signs, which warn of the risk of sudden death of the infant, which are the stopping of breathing, pale face, the appearance of blue spots on the body, excessive sweating, swallowing difficulties, and frequent vomiting.-
And the association added that the causes of sudden infant death syndrome are not known precisely, but doctors suggest that it is due to smoking during pregnancy and after childbirth, drug abuse, premature birth, and the young age of the mother (less than 20 years), in addition to the infant sleeping on his stomach and the extreme rise or fall. to his body temperature.
