Stormy crisis of the Sudanese economy

The Sudanese economy has been going through a crisis for years. The crisis has worsened and economic activity has stagnated since a military coup in October 2021 impeded a political transition that was supposed to lead to democratic elections.

Billions of dollars in external financial support and a debt relief program overseen by the International Monetary Fund have been suspended.

Strengthening anti-money laundering measures

Simultaneously, the monetary authorities, operating banks, exchange and money transfer companies in Sudan have strengthened measures to combat dirty money laundering, aimed at besieging illegal financial operations, including money smuggling, bribery, selling antiquities, trafficking in people and weapons, financing terrorism, and others.

Sudanese banks began implementing these procedures in implementation of the instructions of the Central Bank of Sudan, which issued, on December 22, new regulatory and supervisory controls on correspondent banking relationships for subjected institutions, with the aim of strengthening anti-money laundering measures.

Institutions concerned with applying these procedures include banks, exchange companies, financial transfers, leasing, microfinance institutions, and any other financial institutions licensed by the Central Bank to provide specific financial activity, which carry out banking correspondent activities, whether internationally or locally, regarding combating money laundering and terrorist financing.

The Sudanese Central Bank instructed these institutions to ensure that their local and foreign branches and subsidiaries adhere to the application of the new controls.
