Four members of the far-right “Oath Keepers” militia were convicted yesterday (Monday) of mutiny for their role in the attack on the US Congress headquarters in Washington, at the conclusion of the second trial conducted on this very rare charge. More than 950 supporters of former Republican President Donald Trump have been suspended since the attack on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021 and have been formally charged for sowing chaos at the headquarters of American democracy.
Only 14 activists, including members of two small far-right groups, nine from the Youth Keepers and five from the Proud Boys, were charged with “rebellion,” a charge punishable by up to 20 years in prison for plotting to use force. in order to confront the government.
The Washington Federal Court organized the trial of the “Outh Keepers”, who were accused of being trained and armed to achieve their plan, in two stages, due to the lack of sufficient space in the hall.
The first trial in November ended with a mixed verdict, as militia founder Stuart Rhodes and a local official were found guilty of mutiny, while the three other defendants on trial were acquitted.
At the end of the second trial, the jury convicted the last four defendants of the “Oath Keepers”, who ranged in age from 38 to 64, and described them as dangerous “traitors”, while their lawyers considered them to be just “braggarts”.
On the other hand, the trial of the “Proud Boys”, including the leader of the movement, Enrique Tarrio, began in December and was still ongoing yesterday in the same court.
The jurors convicted Richard Barnett, who appeared in a photo with his feet on a table in the office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during the storming of the Capitol building, with other crimes as well, especially obstructing an official mechanism, theft, and storming an official building using a dangerous weapon that is a stick that can emit electric charges.
The French Press Agency photographed Barnett on January 6, 2021, in Pelosi’s office, and the photo spread around the world, allowing the police to quickly arrest him.
The sentence will be issued against him in May, during which time he will remain in house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
