Lebanon announces the resumption of the investigation into the Beirut port explosion case
Today, Monday, the investigating judge in the Beirut port explosion file, Tariq Al-Bitar, decided to return to follow up the investigation in this case.
In this context, the Lebanese newspaper “An-Nahar”, quoting sources, revealed that Al-Bitar decided to prosecute 8 new personalities, including the Director of State Security, Major General Antoine Saliba, and the Director of Public Security, Major General Abbas Ibrahim.--
And the same sources reported that Al-Bitar ordered the release of 5 detainees in the case, who are the Syrian worker at the port, Ahmed Al-Rajabi, the contractor for maintenance work at the port, Salim Shibli, the director at the port, Michel Nakhoul, the former director of customs, Shafiq Marei, and the director of port operations, Sami Al-Hussein.-
According to the Lebanese authorities, the explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020 resulted in the death of 215 people and the injury of 6,500.
It stated that the explosion was caused by the storage of large quantities of ammonium nitrate inside the port, without preventive measures, following the outbreak of a fire, the causes of which are unknown. It later became clear that officials at several levels were aware of the dangers of storing this explosive substance and did not move a finger.
On the other hand, Lebanese human rights organizations are calling on the United Nations to send an independent fact-finding mission, given the faltering of the local investigation.
