Shedding light on mountain performing arts in Saudi Arabia is the main focus of the Qimam International Festival of Mountain Performing Arts in its second edition, which is organized by the Theater and Performing Arts Authority for a week in 7 locations in the Asir region, southwest of the Kingdom.

The festival, which started last Friday, focuses on highlighting folklore in the mountainous regions, with the participation of 16 Saudi bands and 14 international bands that present about 32 mountain performances from within the Kingdom and a number of countries around the world.

The festival witnessed the organization of a carnival procession in the Art Street in Abha, on vehicles that were designed to simulate the cultural and folklore aspect of the participating countries, in addition to the traditional and popular costumes that characterize the participating countries, adding a rich diversity to the festival.

The CEO of the Saudi Theater and Performing Arts Authority, Sultan Al-Bazai, confirmed that the Qimam Festival is the first international festival specialized in mountain performing arts, and it would contribute to introducing the archaeological heritage sites in the Asir region.

He added that the festival will witness singing concerts that are distinguished by mixing distinctive voices and performing groups, in which visitors will get to know young talents.

The festival also seeks to highlight the folklore of Saudis in their various regions, and contribute to the development of the theater and performing arts sector, as well as improving the quality of life and developing the cultural sector, in line with the goals of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

The CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Authority continued that the festival builds on the success it achieved in the first edition, as it aims to raise awareness of the arts and the ancient heritage in Saudi Arabia and the world, and introduces visitors to its history, arts, methods and how to perform it, adding that heritage has a role in bringing people together, which is the main message. Which the Qimam International Festival focuses on, which enhances the Kingdom’s position on the global cultural map.

The Qimam International Festival for Mountain Performing Arts presents a cultural program in cooperation with the Abha Literary Club, which includes dialogue seminars and educational workshops for a group of local and international speakers on folklore performing arts, while the festival sites host a group of events and areas, such as a fashion exhibition, theater events, and activities for the villagers. and platforms for performing live in front of the audience.

The cultural program of the festival includes 14 panel discussions and a workshop with the participation of writers, researchers and specialists, which are held daily at the headquarters of the Literary Club in Abha. The festival witnessed a panel discussion yesterday, Saturday, that shed light on the history of mountain performing arts in the Arabian Peninsula.

On Sunday, a symposium was held entitled “Mythology and the Mountain: Did Legends Contribute to the Richness and Diversity of Mountain Performing Arts?” This symposium touched on the sources that contributed to the diversity of mountain arts throughout history.

The festival will also witness a symposium on Monday entitled “Folk Tales: The Magic Carpet of Grandmothers” and another on Tuesday entitled “Indications of Colors in the Costumes of Mountain Performing Arts”. A symposium entitled “Women’s Mountain Performing Arts: A World of Richness and Diversity” will be held on Wednesday, in Next Thursday, a symposium will be held on the experience of the “Saudi Roads” program in documenting mountain arts in the Asir region.

On the last day of the festival, a panel discussion entitled “Semiotics of Mountain Performing Arts” will be held.

The activities of the festival hosted 7 sites in the Asir region, with the aim of contributing to the definition of the archaeological heritage sites in the region. The historical palaces, the palaces of Al Mushait, and the castles of Abu Nuqat al-Mutahmi.
