The Pentagon is preparing for a scheduled visit by newly elected Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy to Taiwan later this year.

And the website of the “Punchpool News” newspaper said, on Monday, quoting an official source as saying that officials in the administration of President Joe Biden “expect McCarthy to visit Taiwan sometime during the spring.”

According to the source, the Pentagon is in the early stages of planning a foreign tour for McCarthy, including an expected visit to Taiwan later this year, as House Republicans look to make countering China a “major focus.”

Planning McCarthy’s trip to Taiwan will be an arduous effort for the Pentagon, which will need to consider security logistics as well as the expected response from Beijing.

When former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to Taipei last year, China stepped up its military exercises near the island as an intimidation tactic, with its top officials criticizing the visit as a “violation” of longstanding US policy toward Taiwan.

McCarthy, for his part, expressed his support for Pelosi’s trip at the time, and said he “would also travel to Taiwan if elected as Speaker.”

Recently, the US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to form a committee to monitor strategic competition with China, headed by Republican Representative Mike Gallagher, amid expectations of another diplomatic confrontation between Washington and Beijing.

And 365 deputies in the parliament approved the formation of the committee, which will make recommendations on policy, compared to 65 opposed.

All 65 votes came from Democrats, some of whom worried the Republican-led committee would be “too partisan,” but another 146 Democrats voted in favor of the resolution.
