Shabab Al-Ahly Dubai is testing its ability to achieve the UAE Professional Football League title, when the leaders face their closest rivals, Sharjah, at the Friday Summit, at the start of the second half of the season.

Shabab Al-Ahly took the runner-up behind Sharjah in 2019, while it was the leader in 2019-2020 before the season was canceled due to the Covid pandemic.

Amid fierce competition for the top this season, Shabab Al-Ahly became the winter champion, when it took advantage of Sharjah’s stumbling by surprisingly drawing with Al-Nasr in the previous round.

Shabab Al-Ahly has 28 points from 13 matches, compared to 27 for Sharjah, 26 for Al-Wehda, 25 for Al-Wasl, and 23 for Al-Jazira and Ajman, and positions can change every round in the wheelchair game.

Shabab Al-Ahly is based on the experience of Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, who previously won the French League with Monaco and the Saudi League with Al-Hilal alongside the AFC Champions League.

“Not many people expected at the start of the season that we would reach this stage and lead the first round when our players were confident that we would achieve it,” Jardim told reporters.

Shabab Al-Ahly started the season with a 0-2 loss from Al-Sharjah.

Despite the absence of 10 players from the ranks of Al-Ahly youth, Jardim affirmed his confidence in the available elements, especially those emerging from the youth team.

Sharjah escaped defeat against Al-Nasr after its goalkeeper, Adel Al-Hosani, was sent off in the 17th minute, and managed to equalize despite the numerical shortage.

Al Ain, the defending champion, is looking forward to continuing its awakening and improving its seventh position when facing Ajman, especially since the difference is only six points from the summit.

The round witnesses a direct clash between Al-Wahda, third in the ranking, and Al-Wasl, fourth, on Saturday, while Al-Jazira seeks to recover from a shocking defeat in the last moments against Ittihad Kalba when it faces Dibba Al-Fujairah.
