RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) – The Israeli army said it shot dead a Palestinian who tried to stab Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.
The Palestinian News Agency said that a 20-year-old man from a refugee camp in Jenin was killed in the area between the town of Qalqilya and the Jewish settlement of Kedumim.
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) said that the dead man, whose name was Aref Lahlouh, was one of its members.
--Violence has increased in the West Bank over the past year after the Israeli army intensified its raids in response to a series of Palestinian attacks in Israeli cities. Israeli forces have killed at least 19 Palestinians, including militants and civilians, in the West Bank since January 1.
-There were no injuries or deaths among the Israelis on Wednesday.
The army released CCTV footage it said was of the attack, showing a man getting out of a car at a bus stop, apparently waving something in his hand. The clip shows the man running towards the soldiers before he fell when they appeared to shoot him.
