Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that an extraordinary meeting was held yesterday, Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Olympic Committee in Tel Aviv, in which representatives of the families of those killed in the Munich operation, deputy interior minister in the German government, Juliana Seifert, and personal advisor to German President Oliver Schmolka participated.

The newspaper pointed out that after the official German apology and offering compensation to the families of the dead, it was decided to form an investigation committee composed of Israeli and German historians.

Yedioth indicated that opening the archive is another step in the agreement between the German government and the families of the dead, which was reached after steps led by Ilana Romano, the wife of the murdered Yusef Romano, and Anki Spitzer, the wife of the murdered Andrei Spitzer.

The Romano and Spitzer had previously claimed that the German government mistreat the families of the dead, and refused to accept the symbolic compensation provided by Germany.

The Munich operation took place on September 5, 1972 and was carried out by eight Palestinian militants, who attacked the residences of the Israeli athletes in the Olympic city of Munich, Germany, and detained nine athletes.

The Fedayeen demanded that Israel release 200 detainees in its prisons in return for the release of the nine athletes. However, the Israeli government refused to comply with the Fedayeen’ demands and sent commandos to attack the Fedayeen.

When the fedayeen learned that Israel was rejecting their demands, they requested two planes from the Germans to take them to Cairo, but the two planes landed at a German military airport belonging to NATO forces, and it was surrounded by German snipers who started shooting at the fedayeen and the Israeli hostages, killing the hostages and five of the fedayeen and arresting three of them.
