Cairo- A medical conference held in Abdeen Palace in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, shed light on the stomach germ bacteria (Helicobacter pylori) and the high incidence of it in Egypt, as it has become one of the health problems that concern many of those infected with it.

Gamal Esmat, advisor to the World Health Organization and professor of liver and digestive system at Cairo University, said, “The percentage of Egyptians infected with stomach germs reached 70%, which some considered a high rate.

The scientific conference of the digestive system – which was attended by a group of doctors, and was held last Saturday – discussed the latest drugs and treatments for the treatment of the stomach germ – its scientific name is Helicobacter pylori – which causes complications for the patient if it is not treated properly. And effective.

Esmat revealed that the treatment protocols for confronting the infection with the germ have been updated, pointing out that the state aims to localize the industry for modern medicines, provide safe and effective treatment and educate citizens.

Bacterial infection as an infection

Regarding the high incidence of stomach germs in Egyptians, Dr. Gamal Esmat told Al-Jazeera Net that we should differentiate between infection with the germ as an infection and the disease resulting from it. The percentage of infection with the germ among Egyptians is about 70%, but the percentage of patients who suffer from the disease caused by the germ is less than 10%.

The advisor to the World Health Organization – who previously held the position of Vice President of Cairo University – indicated that this percentage is statistics for research conducted by professors in various Egyptian universities, and the aim of announcing it is to educate people about the germ and its complications.

And if the infected numbers need to provide a national campaign to detect and treat the disease, as in many other chronic and dangerous diseases; Esmat confirmed that this is not necessary. Because the initiatives launched by the Ministry to confront some diseases such as the “C” virus (hepatitis C) were because it results in serious complications such as cirrhosis, cancer and liver failure in a large way, but the complications of H. pylori infection do not need a national medical campaign.

However, he added, “But the matter needs to educate the patient and the doctor on the basis of two things: the first is a good diagnosis of injury and disease and the difference between them, and the second is how to treat the disease itself and not the injury, and therefore the injury does not represent a major health problem in Egypt that calls for concern.”

When should stomach germs be treated?

The former Minister of Health’s advisor for liver diseases and a member of the National Committee for Combating Hepatitis Viruses, Dr. Yehia El-Shazly, said that the presence of the stomach germ is “unsatisfactory”, meaning that the presence of the germ in itself is useless and there is no need to treat it.

He added to Al-Jazeera Net that in cases of some diseases such as inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and duodenal wall, they do not heal in the presence of the germ, and therefore the germ must be treated in addition to treating these diseases, meaning that if the germ is associated with these diseases, it must be treated.

Professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Ain Shams University confirmed that these diseases (related to ulcers and inflammation of the stomach and duodenum) may exist in the absence of the germ, but if it is found with it, it must be treated until the patient recovers and the disease does not return to him again.

Pay attention to hygiene

In turn, Consultant Hepatologist and Digestive System at Theodore Bilharz Institute and Harvard University Fellow Dr. Hisham Al-Khayyat confirmed that the rate of infection, not disease, that is, H. As for the elderly, it ranges between 70 and 80%. Despite this, 5 to 10% have diseases related to stomach germs, such as inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum.

In his speech to Al-Jazeera Net, he confirmed that there is a difference between infection and disease, and the problem in Egypt is that there is a fear of the spiral germ, and everyone infected with the germ believes that he is sick and he is not sick with any symptoms of it. Therefore, its presence without symptoms is not a cause for concern, and therefore the failure to conduct an official census at the level of the Republic is due to the fact that the germ does not represent a danger, but these numbers come from research conducted by some health institutes and universities in a number of different Egyptian governorates.

He added that the stomach germ is contagious, and it can be transmitted from one person to another, and it is also transmitted through contaminated food and contaminated water, and this is a problem that some regions and villages in Egypt suffer from, which the state seeks to address through the “Decent Life” program.
