Today, the Arabic Booker Prize announced its long list, which included 16 novels. Egypt had the lion’s share. For the first time, 5 Egyptian novels competed in the prize list since its inception in 2008. In the following report, we monitor the Egyptian presence throughout the award.


First session 2008


The great Egyptian writer Bahaa Taher won this edition for his novel “Oasis of the West”. The short list in this session, which was not approved for the long list, included the novel “The Swan’s Tweet” by Makkawi Saeed.


Second session 2009


In this cycle, the Egyptian writer Dr. Youssef Zaidan won for his novel “Azazel”. While I reached the long list of Egyptian novels: “The Intensive Care Room” by Ezz El-Din Shukry Fisher. AndThe novel “Hunger” by the writer Muhammad Al-Basati competed in the short list.


Third session 2010


In this cycle, the novel “Scattered by Sparks” by the Saudi writer Abdo Khal won.


As for the Egyptian novels, it competed with “Beyond Paradise” by Mansoura Ezz El-Din, and “A Cloudy Day in the Western Land” by the writer Muhammad Al-Mansi Qandil.


Fourth session 2011


This was the cycle in which two novels were announced to win equally, and the novel “The Bow and the Butterfly” by Moroccan writer Muhammad Al-Ash’ari, and the novel “The Collar of Pigeons” by the Saudi writer Rajaa Al-Alam won..


As for the novels that made it to the long list of Egyptian novels, “Estasia” by Khairy Shalaby.


As for the novels that were able to reach the short list, they are: “Brooklyn Heights” by the Egyptian writer Miral El-Tahawy, and “Oriental Dance” by the Egyptian writer Khaled Al-Bari..


Fifth session 2012


In this edition, the novel “The Druze of Belgrade… The Story of Hanna Yacoub” by the Lebanese writer Rabih Jaber won. While I reached the long list of Egyptian novels: “Nabati” by the writer Dr. Youssef Zaidan.


As for the novels that were able to reach the short list, they are: “An Embrace at the Brooklyn Bridge” by Ezz El-Din Shukri Fisher, and “The Unemployed” by the writer Nasser Iraq.


Sixth session 2013


In this session, the novel “The Bamboo Stalk” by Kuwaiti writer Saud Al-Sanousi won, while the Egyptian novels reached the long list, “The Return of the Sheikh” by the writer Muhammad Abdel Nabi, and “Toya” by the Egyptian writer Ashraf Al-Ashmawy..


As for the Egyptian novels that reached the short list: “Mawlana” by the Egyptian writer Ibrahim Issa.


Seventh session 2014


In this cycle, the novel “Frankenstein in Baghdad” by the Iraqi writer Ahmed Saadawi won, while it reached the long list:


“Alexandria in a Cloud” by the Egyptian writer Ibrahim Abdel-Meguid, “The Contradictions of the Lord” by the Egyptian writer Ashraf Al-Khamaisi..


As for the novels that made it to the short list, they are “The Blue Elephant” by Ahmed Murad.


Eighth session 2015


In this edition, the novel “The Italian” by Tunisian writer Shukri Al-Mabkhout won. While I reached the long list: “The Size of a Grape” by Mona El-Shimi, “Graphite” by Hisham Al-Khashin, and “Sharp Deviation” by Egyptian writer Ashraf Al-Khamaisi. AndI made it to the short list: No Egyptian novel made it to the long list.


The ninth session 2016


The winner of this edition was the novel “Fate: Concerto of the Holocaust and the Nakba” by the Palestinian writer Rebai Al-Madhoun.

The Saudi writer Mohammed Hassan Alwan won this edition for his novel “A Small Death”. While I reached the long list: “Paolo” by Youssef Rakha. As for the novel that reached the short list, “In the Spider’s Room” by the Egyptian writer Mohamed Abdel Nabi.


Eleventh session 2018


The winning novel “The Second War of the Dog” by the Palestinian Ibrahim Nasrallah.


Novels that made it to the long list:


The novel Fortress of the Dust by the Egyptian writer Ahmed Abdel Latif, the novel Passion by the Egyptian Rasha Adly,


Short List Novels: No Egyptian novel reached the short list.


Twelfth session 2019


The prize was won by Hoda Barakat, the novel Night Post.


The novels of the long list and the Mexican wife of Iman Yahya have arrived


The novel “The Commandments” by Adel Esmat made it to the short list.


Thirteenth session 2020


The prize was won by the novel “The Spartan Diwan” by Abd al-Wahhab al-Issawi from Algeria.


The long list of novels by Rasha Adly and The Last Days of the Pasha have arrived.


And I reached the short list, Fardan, by Youssef Zaidan.



Fourteenth session 2021


The prize was won by the novel Notebooks of Warraq by Jalal Barjas.


The novels of the long list reached the novel Basatine Al-Basra by Mansoura Ezz Al-Din, No Egyptian novel made it to the short list.


The fifteenth session 2022


The prize was won by the novel Bread at Uncle Milad’s Table by the Libyan writer Muhammad Al-Naas, WThe novels of the long list have reached the novel Whispering the Scorpion, by the writer Muhammad Tawfiq, the novel A Tale of Joy by the writer Izz al-Din Shukri Fisher, Umm Mimi by Bilal Fadl. And reached the short list, the novel Cairo Makitt by Tariq Imam.


Sixteenth session 2023


The long list: the novel “Everyone Says I Love You” by the Egyptian writer Mai Al-Telmisani, the novel “The Days of the Rising Sun” by the Egyptian writer Miral El-Tahawy, the novel “The Ages of Daniel in the City of Threads” by the Egyptian writer Ahmed Abdel Latif, the novel “The Antique” by the Egyptian writer Nasser Iraq, the novel “ Bar Layalina” by the Egyptian writer Ahmed Al-Fakhrany.
