It is noteworthy that the explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, killed 215 people and injured 6,500. According to the authorities, the explosion was caused by the storage of large quantities of ammonium nitrate inside the port, without precautionary measures, following the outbreak of a fire whose causes are unknown.
It later became clear that officials at several levels were aware of the dangers of storing this explosive substance and did not move a finger.
Lebanese human rights organizations are calling on the United Nations to send an independent fact-finding mission, given the faltering of the local investigation.
