The Federal Ministry of Energy said that a major fault in the power grid in Pakistan caused a nationwide power outage in the early hours of Monday morning.

“According to preliminary information, the national network was subjected to low frequencies, which caused a major malfunction. There is rapid work to repair the network,” the ministry said in a statement.

The fault caused power outages in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, and other major cities such as Karachi and Lahore, according to the news site “The News” in Pakistan.

The country’s main power supply was cut off at around 7:30 a.m. local time, which the Energy Ministry said was due to a widespread failure in the power system.
