This came in a statement by the committee at the end of a workshop it organized in Port Louis, Mauritius, in the presence of international partners and representatives of 40 member states of the committee and governmental and non-governmental organizations concerned with wildlife, in order to introduce the risks of illegal wildlife trade, environmental management and marine safety, according to local media. .

The committee, whose membership includes African countries bordering the Indian Ocean, stated that the Indian Ocean region is one of the 34 hotspots of biodiversity in the world, noting that in 2021 alone, “316 kg of (rare) black corals and 1,024 were intercepted.” A sea turtle off the coast of Madagascar.

She stressed that most of the illegal trade in wildlife species is carried out by sea, pointing out that this illegal trade generates profits ranging from 7 billion to 23 billion dollars annually.

The Committee considers that, in addition to harming the economy of the countries concerned, wildlife trafficking also threatens to introduce invasive species that could endanger local ecosystems and threaten the emergence of zoonotic diseases (transmitted from animals to humans) and that 60% of the diseases that currently appear are of this type ( such as the Covid-19 pandemic).

The Indian Ocean Commission was established in 1982 and was institutionalized in 1984 and is headquartered in Port Louis, Mauritius.
