A software engineer described how he found out he had been fired by Google as a “slap in the face”.

Jeremy Joslin, who according to his LinkedIn profile has worked at the tech giant since 2003, said the company informed him via email, adding: “It’s hard to believe that after 20 years at Google, I unexpectedly discovered my last day… In an email, what a slap in the face, I wish I could say goodbye to everyone face to face,” according to businessinsider.

Jocelyn added in a post on linkedin“I never thought it would end like this.”

Google announced last Friday that it would lay off nearly 12,000 employees, or 6% of its global workforce, affecting employees “all the time.” the alphabetProduct Areas, Functions, Levels and Regions CEO Sundar Pichai said the company was hiring too quickly and could not retain all of its staff in today’s “economic reality”.

The former Google employees are gone linkedin and Twitter for posting about the sudden and impersonal nature of the layoffs.

Elizabeth Hart, Senior Marketing Director of the Global Advertising Team at Google, who has worked with the company since 2007, posted on the website: linkedinthat she found out she had been fired when she checked her phone on Friday morning when she was “cloudy-eyed and still half asleep” and saw a notice that her access to the company had expired, as well as a notice regarding an item in The New York Times on layoffs.

Google has publicly announced the layoffs, and the company said the layoff announcement was sent to employees earlier in the day and affected US employees were notified beforehand, though it didn’t say when.

Bloomberg reported that the layoffs appeared structural rather than performance-based, and some workers say most or even all of their team has been laid off.

In the comments, Jocelyn acknowledged that the business has changed in the two decades he’s been there, he told the site. linkedin“It’s not the same company you created 20 years ago.”
