The Moroccan artist Issam Kamal is considered one of the most prominent stars of the Moroccan art scene, who combined singing, playing, composing and writing words.

In an interview with Hespress, Issam Kamal unveils his new singing works, talks about his return to “Mazakan” after years of separation, the secret of his stability in France, and gives his opinion on the Moroccan song and other topics.

Tell us about the details of your new artwork

I have a group of new works and artistic concerts, and I deal with many artists, in addition to that I am preparing an album in French, and the return of the Mazakan band with new productions, which is an album.

The next work will be a song entitled “Al-Buhali”, which sings about the harsh social conditions that the Moroccan citizen suffers from, especially those who are characterized by tenderness and intention.

I will also meet at the beginning of next month with the Moroccan community in Paris in an artistic evening, in addition to other works.

“Mazakan” is one of the most famous music groups in Morocco. Was it able to regain its glow after years of separation?

Despite years of separation, the “Mazakan” group was not living with unemployment. I worked with the artist Hamid El-Hadary and made national and international tours and never stopped. One of the reasons for my return to the group is a personal and human matter, because we, the members of the band, were like family, and during the pandemic, we were very nostalgic and thought of reuniting and continuing with each other.

As for restoring the glow, I see that the pandemic has hidden everything; Unfortunately, the artistic and cultural field in Morocco declined after that, and Moroccans’ consumption of everything artistic and cultural declined a lot. The “Mazakan” group was famous for its strength on stage and direct meeting with the audience, and in order to bring back the brilliance of the past and cultural activity, we must wait a little, but while waiting for that we constantly present new works of art.

How was the experience of singing in French for the first time? Will the public accept it?

The experience of singing in French was a must for me; Because since I was young, I have been writing words in French, and Morocco is a Francophone country, whether we like it or not. We speak it and part of our culture is French, in addition to the Arab and Amazigh part, under the banner of “Tamgrabit”, which includes a diverse mixture of cultures.

In order to express part of my culture, I chose to publish works in French, also by virtue of my settlement in France. Praise be to God, the song was accepted by my surroundings here and by the French media as well. The song was broadcast on French radio and there was a response.

-

Will the audience accept me or not? This remains a matter of tastes; Because this work is a bit daring, and through it I moved away from my old style that I was known for, and of course that would come as a surprise. Some accepted it, but the minority did not accept that.

In your opinion, has the artistic field in Morocco been able to recover after the Corona pandemic?

No, no, I think that we have not recovered culturally in Morocco, and I think that culture in Morocco already suffers from many problems, including a legislative problem, as we still need legislative texts that regulate this field, we still need to establish the rights and duties of artists, the Moroccan public still has a culture of free, For nearly twenty years, free festivals have spread in a terrible way, and this matter kills the cultural industry in Morocco, and it is not the public’s fault, but the economic strategy of culture in Morocco is like this that the state has watched over, and this is not in the interest of the artist, and therefore not in the interest of the consumer, because the artist will not create abundantly and abundantly .

Recently, some artists have presented works of a good standard, but the quality is absent and there is a significant decline in the intellectual level of the Moroccan song at the level of words.

Why did you choose to settle in France?

Family circumstances prompted me to settle in France because I got married and my wife lives here, and I have a story with this country, as I used to visit it a lot since ancient times, so I thought of settling here for a certain period.

What is your assessment of the reality of Moroccan music today?

As for Moroccan music, I see a contradiction in terms of abundance of production first, techniques and sound quality. God willing, the Moroccan song caused a revolution, and there is a multiplicity and a group of patterns emanating from the Moroccan cultural diversity, but there is a significant decline in the level of words, and this is a serious problem that exists globally, because on the global level words have become characterized by simplicity that is not required.

Therefore, we must research and create more and talk about important topics in an artistic way using metaphor and writing techniques to develop Moroccan darija.

On the economic level, the Moroccan artist is suffering from the revolution on the Internet and the youth’s demand for Moroccan song. Economically, things do not keep pace with the development of the productive revolution, and the artist has not tasted the fruits of the efforts of the past twenty years, because the problem lies, as I said, in the gratuitousness, so we find that a group of artists leave the field and cannot continue in it for a long time because it is financially difficult for the artist to self-produce in light of Extinction of producers currently.

This is the reality, the picture is very beautiful, but the artist is still suffering, and public policies in Morocco have not yet found solutions for this, and despite the activation of compulsory social coverage, it was established incorrectly.

Does the diversity of musical works in the Moroccan market today match the quality of the latter?

Indeed, there is a great diversity in the Moroccan market. As artists, we travel and meet artists from other countries and live with them. We know that Morocco is one of the richest countries culturally, especially in terms of music, because, praise be to God, we are a country whose roots extend for centuries, and from north to south it has Different styles are renewed and with a special feature, there is a diversity of distinct sounds that we have, and our heritage is very rich. The only problem remains in the quality of the words that do not match these matters.
