The issue of renewing Mohamed Salah’s contract with Liverpool is still unclear, but there is no longer any doubt that the Egyptian star has become one of the best players in the history of the English club.
Mohamed Salah reached his highest level this season, scoring his 20th goal in all competitions, when he led his team on Tuesday to victory over AC Milan, the Italian, in the Champions League, and is still in the month of December.
Only Ian Rush (December 7) and Roger Hunt (December 25) were surpassed by Salah in the speed of scoring the most goals in Liverpool. Salah provided 9 assists to his teammates as well.
The former Fiorentina and Roma player did not perform well at the San Siro, but fans stood in the stands applauding him as he walked off the pitch, an hour into the match.
When Pat Nevin was asked: “How do you rate Mohamed Salah, in the absence of the control of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo,” he answered in an interview on BBC Channel 5: “He is the best player in the world.”
Former Celtic coach Neil Lennon said: “Mohamed Salah is there at the top with any player I have seen in recent years. He is the closest player I have seen to Messi.”
Spanish football suffers
AC Milan advanced against Liverpool thanks to a goal scored by English player, Fikayo Tomori, before Salah equalized the score in the 36th minute of the match.
The Liverpool striker was the fastest to snatch the rebound from goalkeeper Mike Maignan, after he blocked a shot from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and with one touch, he shoved it past AC Milan.
“He thinks about things differently,” said Nevin. “It seems that he finds strength in his left foot that only Lionel Messi can find.”
But questions remain about Salah’s future at Anfield. The Egyptian national team star has not yet signed a contract renewal with Liverpool, and his current contract expires in 2023.
And the coach of the red team, Jurgen Klopp, seemed optimistic this week that Salah would sign a new contract, and former Liverpool player Michael Owen believed that Salah would remain in his team.
“It will be agreed upon, but these things are complicated,” Owen said on BT Sport. “This is perhaps the biggest contract in his career, and he must think about it carefully.”
And the former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, added: “Do you think he is sitting with his manager and telling him, “Look for the highest paid player in the league, and give me a higher salary than him?” He is the best player in the league right now.
When Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan were drawn together, that group was described as the “group of death”, but Liverpool easily knocked them all down.
Thus, it became the first English team in history to win all matches in the group stage of the European Champions League, scoring 17 goals and conceding six.
The red team also won six consecutive games in the Champions League for the first time, despite the introduction of changes to its starting lineup, and topped its group by 11 points from runner-up Atletico Madrid.
Klopp said: “I’m proud of the sixth match in particular. We chose that squad because we wanted to win the match. We needed comfortable players, we needed players who are motivated in a difficult match, because of a crazy program, which requires us to constantly be ready for the next match.”
“What the youngsters did is a great achievement, it is a pride that is not beyond pride. I am very happy. The performance was outstanding. We scored 21 shots on goal, created many scoring opportunities. We defended with distinction as well.”
