Bottom side Saint-Etienne sack coach Boyel

Claude Boyle became the first coach to be sacked in the French Football League this season, after bottom club Saint-Etienne abandoned his services following a humiliating 5-0 defeat at home against Rennes on Sunday.

The former coach of Monaco, Lyon and Leicester City, paid the price for his victory in only two matches out of 17 stages in the league so far, collecting only 12 points.

A statement on the club’s website read: “The CEO of Saint-Etienne has taken the decision to dismiss Mr. Claude Pouille from first-team coaching until further notice,” leaving his position two years after taking office in October 2019.

Boyel’s dismissal comes at a time of uncertainty for the club, which was put up for sale last April by shareholders, after they failed at their first attempt in the spring of 2018.

The green team has suffered nine defeats this season, compared to only two wins and six draws.
