Why did Facebook stop the face recognition system?

Facebook has announced that it will shut down its facial recognition system that automatically identifies users in photos and videos, citing growing societal concerns about the use of this technology, Reuters reported.

“Regulators are still in the process of presenting a clear set of rules governing the use of this system… In light of this ongoing uncertainty, we believe that limiting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of Use cases are appropriate.”

Reuters quoted a Facebook spokesperson as saying that the removal of the system will be applied globally and is expected to be completed by December.

The removal of the facial recognition system by the world’s largest social media platform comes in light of criticism that this technology can incorrectly identify people, and may discriminate by preferring white faces over black people.
