A new study has warned that the next coronavirus may be transmitted to humans from mice.
According to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”, the study team of Princeton University conducted a genetic analysis of different types of mammals, and specifically studied the ACE2 receptors that coronaviruses use to enter mammalian cells.
The researchers found evidence that in the past, some species of rodents were repeatedly exposed to SARS-like coronaviruses, which likely led them to develop some level of resistance against these viruses.
This means that rodents and mice may carry these viruses without showing symptoms, and may transmit them to humans on a large scale.
Molecular biologist Sean King, who co-authored the study, said: “Identifying animals that have resistance against coronaviruses, and thus can serve as viral reservoirs, is vital to preventing future epidemics.”
He added: “Our study indicates that rodents, during their evolution in the past, could have been repeatedly infected with coronaviruses, which made them adapt to these viruses. This raises the suspicion that some types of modern rodents carry coronaviruses without developing symptoms. This includes viruses that may not have been discovered yet.
The full results of the study were published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology.
Many scientists believe that the emerging corona virus, which is currently circulating, transmitted to humans from bats.
Previous research has shown that horseshoe bats called Rhinolophus pusillus can host many SARS-like viruses without showing severe symptoms.
