A new study has revealed that the times we eat may have an impact on our health, and that eating at the “right” time can give us a long life.

A drink commonly consumed during breakfast helps lower blood pressure

Research suggests that getting breakfast by 7 a.m. can boost life expectancy.

The scientists wanted to discover if the timing of the first meal of the day was linked to longevity.

Previous research has found that eating late at night disrupts the body’s internal clock and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. But few studies have looked at whether breakfast timing has the same effect.

So researchers from the City University of New York tracked more than 34,000 Americans over the age of 40 for several decades.

The volunteers recorded their eating times and the scientists compared them with death rates over the course of the study.

The results, published in the journal Nutrition, showed that those who ate breakfast between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. were 6% less likely to die prematurely from major diseases such as heart disease or cancer compared to those who regularly ate breakfast at 8 a.m., and 12 % lower risk of early death than those who eat their first meal at 10 am.

It is believed that skipping breakfast, or eating it late, disrupts the body’s “eating clock”, the internal programming that controls the release of nutrition-related hormones, such as insulin, and that an irregular meal can disrupt the signals it sends.

The glucose levels in our bodies naturally peak at certain times of the day. Because food-related hormones burn this glucose out of the bloodstream, eating late means levels stay high. Persistently high blood glucose can lead to diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
