Fifth Saudi fingerprints in the “Oscar”… Does it cross the threshold of “acting”? – Saudi News

By choosing the Saudi Film Authority, the feature film “Had Al Tar” to officially represent Saudi Arabia in the upcoming Oscar competition in the category of Best International Film, Saudi cinema will have made its fifth mark on the journey of artistic self-search and consolidation of stability in one of the largest festivals in the world throughout history “The Oscars”. It is a relentless race that started in 2013, but it took a different form in recent years, and we started to see more mature businesses, after Oujda 2013 and Baraka vs Baraka, the ideal candidate and Sebdat Al Bahar, respectively. The nomination of “Had Al-Tar” was made by the Saudi Committee for the Oscars, consisting of the Chairman of the Committee, CEO of the Film Authority Abdullah Al-Ayaf, director Haifaa Al-Mansour, critic and director Hana Al-Omair, Director of the Organizing Committee of the Red Sea Festival, producer Muhammad Al-Turki, and Director of the Saudi Film Festival Ahmed Al-Mulla. With this nomination, the film will compete with films from the rest of the world, and will go through several sorting stages, before announcing the initial and then final list that will be chosen by the American Academy of Sciences and Arts awarding the Oscars, and the winner will be announced at the 94th session ceremony that will be held at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022.

The film was shown for the first time at the Cairo Film Festival, and won the Special Jury Prize at the festival. It was also shown at the Swedish Malmö Arab Film Festival, and won the Best Director Award, in addition to being shown inside the Kingdom and winning the Best Feature Film award at the Saudi Film Festival.

Regarding the nomination of his film to represent the Kingdom in the Oscar competition, Abdulaziz Al-Shalahi, the film’s director, said, “I am happy and proud to represent the Kingdom in the Oscar race for the best international film category.

Writer and film critic Fahd Al-Osta said about the selection that it is a well-deserved nomination; Because it is the most qualified film to enter the Oscar nomination race, representing the Kingdom, and this is the fifth representation in the Oscar nomination race for the Best Foreign Film award, even if we do not pass “acting” to “short list” and then the achievement stage that we aspire to, which is “nomination” and then the biggest dream. the win”.

As for the artist, Ibrahim Al-Hasawi described the film as a qualitative leap for Saudi cinema, and said a local Saudi film with distinction looks and surprises us.
