Facebook Inc said on Tuesday it will phase out its facial recognition system in the coming days.

This system automatically recognizes and identifies users in photos and videos.

Facebook said data stored for more than one billion people will be deleted.

The company explained that there are many concerns about the technology, and that “regulators are still in the process of introducing a clear set of rules to govern its use.”

“Given the continuing uncertainty, we believe that restricting the use of facial recognition to a narrow set of use cases is appropriate,” the company said in a statement.

However, Facebook still sees the technology as “a powerful tool, for example, for people who need to verify their identity or to prevent fraud and impersonation.”
