The British Minister of Health, Sajid Javid, said that the new strain of Corona that was discovered in South Africa, may pose a threat to public health, due to its ability to spread and the weak effectiveness of vaccines against it.
Javid said in a statement to the British House of Commons that “the emergence of the mutant known as B1.1.529 was a source of great international concern, and it is possible that this new strain had spread outside African countries, where it is believed to have evolved,” stressing that “no infections have been discovered.” in the UK so far.
Javid explained that “this mutation was first discovered in Hong Kong in a person who came from a trip to South Africa,” noting that “the United Kingdom, was the first country to identify the potential threat to this new alternative and alert international partners about it.”
He added: “More cases of infection have been identified in South Africa and in Botswana, and it is very likely that it will now spread to other countries. We are concerned that this new variant may pose a significant public health risk.”
