Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Nearly 28 million American children, between the ages of 5 and 11, are eligible to receive the “Covid-19” vaccine soon, and plans to encourage them to do so are underway.

The US Food and Drug Administration’s Independent Advisory Committee on Vaccines is meeting on Tuesday, with the aim of discussing whether it should be allowed to give younger children the “Pfizer / BioNTech” vaccine. This vaccine has been approved for emergency use by children between the ages of 12 and 15 and is approved for people 16 and older.

In the event that members of the Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration vote in favor of allowing the vaccine to be given to this age group, then the final decision of the agency is to give permission for use or not.

Then the CDC’s independent advisory committee will meet on November 2 and 3 to vote for or against a green light for a vaccine. Finally, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walinsky decides whether to accept or reject the committee’s recommendations. When Walinsky signs permission for emergency use of the vaccine, younger children can receive it immediately.

How does the vaccine work and is it safe?

The FDA needs to review pediatric trial data, because this category does not fall into the category of young adults, as prescribed by pediatricians.

Children’s bodies still develop and react differently to the vaccine than adults. Therefore, scientists test different doses of any vaccine for children, in order to determine what the child’s body can tolerate, and what level of dose may protect him. Pfizer has requested approval for a dose of 10 micrograms for younger children. While doses for children 12 years of age and older contain 30 micrograms. The vaccine is received in two doses with a time difference of three weeks.

Data from Pfizer’s Phase II and III trials in September showed that its COVID-19 vaccine produced a “strong” antibody response in children between 5 and 11 years old. In a new file it submitted before the Food and Drug Administration meeting, Pfizer said that its vaccine was found to be 90.7 percent safe and effective against symptoms of “Covid-19”, in children between 5 and 11 years old.

This experiment included about 2,000 children, including three children infected with “Covid-19” in the group whose members received the vaccine, and 16 injuries in the group in which the participating children received the dummy vaccine. Children in both groups got two doses of the vaccine or the placebo.

And “Pfizer” indicated that no serious side effects such as endocarditis or myocarditis were recorded during the three-month period in which the children were under observation. These rare side effects have been reported in some older adults and adolescents who received the vaccine. The scientists believed that this was due to the small number of children participating in the study.

According to a Food and Drug Administration assessment published last Friday evening, the benefits of the “Pfizer/BioNtech” vaccine against “Covid-19” outweigh the risks that children between 5 and 11 years may be exposed to in the event of infection with the virus. The risk of developing endocarditis, myocardial infarction, which requires treatment, and even admission to hospital, but the risk of infection with “Covid-19″ is higher if there is a spread of the virus.

Dr. Ashish Jha, Dean of the School of Public Health at Brown University, commented that the vaccine has a high level of efficacy, adding: “This is what we witnessed with the beginning of the use of Pfizer, before the spread of the delta mutant and other mutants of concern, so I think it is Very convincing.”

Since the pandemic began, about 6.2 million children have been infected with COVID-19. Although the number of infections among children has decreased recently, only last week, 131,000 children were infected with the virus, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Severe illness in children is rare, as only 5% are hospitalized, and 0.025% have a life difference. But this means that 637 children have died from Covid-19, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Control. And “Covid-19” was included among the top ten causes of death for children between 5 and 14 years old, in the first half of this year.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy told CNN that “Covid was not a benign disease among children, even if they did better compared to their elders, as hundreds of them lost their lives, thousands were hospitalized, and their lives were affected by” Covid-19. protect our children. We want them to get their lives back.”

Will parents bring their children to receive the vaccine?

It is not yet clear if the parents will do so. Only a recent survey conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation in September found that a third of parents with children in the target age group would prefer to wait and see results before vaccinating their children. About a third of the others will immediately vaccinate their children. If the number of adolescent vaccinations is taken as an indicator, vaccination of younger children may be slow.

“I hope most parents realize the real benefit of vaccinating children,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN Wednesday.
