Tensions rose Friday between Dutchman Max Verstappen and Britain’s Lewis Hamilton, two days before a battle in the United States Grand Prix, the 17th stage of the Formula One World Championship.

At the Austin circuit, the Dutch driver, Red Bull, described his British rival, the Mercedes driver, for the title as a “stupid idiot” in the second round of free practice.

World champion Hamilton infuriated Verstappen when he refused to let him pass a corner at the start of the second round of free practice, and nearly knocked him out of the track. The Dutchman lifted his right hand off the steering wheel to make a gesture with his middle finger.

Verstappen complained on team radio that Hamilton was a “stupid idiot”.

Verstappen finished the second round eighth after finishing third in the first.

Hamilton did not address the incident at all, saying only: “Overall it was a good and productive day, although there is still work to be done.”

This tension comes to fuel the strong competition for the title this season among drivers, as the first at the age of 24 seeks his first world title, while the second, 36, aspires to his eighth title and break the record partnership with the German legend Michael Schumacher.

Verstappen leads the standings, six points ahead of Hamilton, with six stages before the end of the season.
