Russia broke off the Group H partnership with Croatia, the runner-up to the world, by defeating Slovenia 2-1, and the second stumbled against Slovakia 2-2, in the eighth round of qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.

The victory over Slovenia is the fourth in a row for Russia and the fifth in the qualifiers, raising its tally to 19 single points in first place, two points ahead of Croatia, who fell into a draw for the second time in the qualifiers, and fell to second place.

In a marginal match within the same group, Cyprus tied its guest, Malta, 2-2.

And two rounds before the end of the competitions, the eighth group’s standings are as follows:

1- Russia – 19 points

2- Croatia – 17 points

3- Slovakia – 10 points

4- Slovenia – 10 points

5- Malta – 5 points
6- Cyprus – 5 points.

The leaders of this group will qualify directly for the World Cup finals to be held in Qatar next year, while the runners-up will move to the European play-off to reserve the ticket to the global wedding.

Russia and Croatia have already secured at least a transfer to the European play-off, but they aspire to top the group to qualify directly for the Qatar World Cup.

The rules of the European qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar stipulate that if two teams are equal in points at the end of the competitions, the difference between them here will be:

A- Goal difference (currently Russia 8+ and Croatia 10+).

B – Number of goals scored (13 for each team currently).

C- Direct confrontations between the two teams.

The Russian national team will face its Cypriot counterpart at home in the next round, before leaving in the last tenth round to face Croatia, which will play before that in the ninth round with Malta.

The following are the scenarios for the qualification of the Russian national team:

1- Russia needs to beat Cyprus and draw with Croatia to qualify directly.

2- Russia’s victory over Cyprus, at least 3-0, and the loss against Croatia, provided that the latter draw with Malta or beat it 1-0.

3- Russia’s loss to Cyprus and its victory over Croatia.
