New complaint in civil court against Bill Cosby for rape

After his release at the end of June, American actor Bill Cosby is facing a new lawsuit in the civil court after an actress accused him of drugging and then raping her more than three decades ago, and is seeking $125 million in damages in a New Jersey court.
The actor, who for years portrayed the ideal father on “The Cosby Show,” was released from prison on June 30 after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned a prison sentence of at least three years for the 2004 sexual assault of Andrea Costand. She was working at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Accusations from dozens of women

This is the only case that led to prosecutions, but Bill Cosby, 84, was facing public accusations of sexual assault by dozens of women, including Lily Bernard, who appeared at his trial.

In the complaint filed Thursday, the actress who participated in “The Cosby Show” asserts that Bill Cosby made an appointment for her in August 1990 to meet him at the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, under the pretext of introducing her to a product.

In the hotel suite, according to the complaint, the actor, who was then an icon in American popular culture, served her a drink that knocked her unconscious, a technique mentioned in other women’s accusations against him. Lily Bernard asserts that she woke up to Bill Cosby raping her.

Lily Bernard relied on a law in New Jersey that gives victims of sexual assault a two-year period, which ends at the end of next month, to file a civil lawsuit against the alleged abusers, regardless of the date of these supposed events.

Cosby’s lawyer responds to the accusations

A Cosby spokesman responded in a statement, saying that the New Jersey state had previously closed an investigation into Lily Bernard’s accusations in 2015 without charging the actor.

Andrew Wyatt said, “This is a new attempt to exploit the judicial process by legislating the door on people who have never provided the slightest evidence, testimony, fact and/or facts to substantiate their allegations.”

In the civil suit, Cosby may be tried in Los Angeles County Court, where he is being sued by another woman who sued him in 2014 for sexual assault in 1974.
