I thought James joined the water polo team

Chelsea full back Rhys James will not be able to play for England in the upcoming international period due to his lack of fitness, but coach Thomas Tuchel joked on Friday that he can play water polo, because he trains in the pool.

James was named to England coach Gareth Southgate’s squad on Tuesday ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary, but Tuchel said James’s inclusion came after a misunderstanding between the team and the club.

“I thought Reese might be in the England water polo team because he trains in the pool,” Tuchel told reporters ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Southampton. “I was surprised but I understood his choice.”

He added, “This will not happen, and the last information I have is that he will not join the national team, and a misunderstanding occurred, and this is normal that may happen, and (the club’s technical advisor) Petr Schick handled the matter.”

Injured midfielder Mason Mount was also left out of the England squad, and Tuchel indicated that he is training with caution after missing the last two losses against Manchester City and Juventus.

“We have to be careful and of course we want Mason and we lack his energy, but the performance cannot be reduced because of the players we miss.”

Tuchel admitted that Chelsea stumbled against two contradictory methods in the last two games, as City played with intense pressure and possession, while Juventus focused on deep defense without possession of the ball.

“The important thing is that we clear our minds and prepare well against Southampton and we must respect their capabilities. Our team was not bad and played good matches and missed the last step by 90 to 100 percent.”
