Eating nuts reduces breast cancer recurrence

A study published Wednesday by the International Journal of Cancer found that regular consumption of peanuts, walnuts and other types of nuts enhances survival and reduces the risk of disease recurrence in women with breast cancer.
The data showed that breast cancer survivors who ate more than half an ounce of nuts per week had five-year survival rates of 95% compared to women who didn’t eat nuts. Additionally, the researchers said that 94% of women who ate nuts regularly did not have a recurrence or recurrence of breast cancer within five years of recovering from their initial disease.

“Consumption of nuts is associated with improved long-term survival among breast cancer survivors,” said study co-author Dr. Xiao Ao Xu.

Nuts are rich in many nutrients, including unsaturated fatty acids, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and other bioactive components, such as phytosterols and phenolic compounds, that have known health benefits.
