(Reuters) – A survey on Friday showed that consumer sentiment in the United States rose in early September after falling the previous month to its lowest level in nearly a decade, but consumers’ view of the outlook remains bleak amid a violent inflation bout.
The University of Michigan said its consumer confidence index rose to 71 in the first half of September from 70.3 in August, which was the lowest since December 2011.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected a reading of 72.
Assessments of the current conditions witnessed a further decline to 77.1 from 78.5 in August, while the survey’s future expectations index rose to 67.1 from 65.1, which was the lowest level since 2013.
