British doctor, Deborah Lee, revealed three nutrients that help reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood, and thus reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The Express notes that, according to the doctor, a high cholesterol level is usually associated with a certain diet. But sometimes kidney disease, hypothyroidism, obesity, anorexia nervosa, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and increased salt consumption may be the cause.

She adds, among the foodstuffs that raise the level of cholesterol in the blood, fatty meats, sausages, pastries and cheese, however, should not be avoided, but their quantity should be determined.

The expert advises replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats, and for that, nuts, olive oil, sesame oil, red fish, legumes and poultry should be added to the diet.

The second way to combat cholesterol, she says, is to use dietary fiber. “You should use whole, unrefined grains that are high in dietary fiber, such as black bread, brown rice and brown pasta,” she says.

The expert also recommends, to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood, eating foods saturated with organic sterols and stanols, such as milk, yogurt, and others. Because a daily intake of 1.2 to 2.4 grams of these compounds can lower your cholesterol level by 10 percent.

And she adds, the use of such foods aims to complement the effectiveness of the use of drugs in the fight against cholesterol.
