Mercedes seeks to avoid ‘harmful conflict’ when Russell joins Hamilton

Mercedes Formula 1 team is keen to avoid a repeat of the unhealthy struggle that has cast a shadow over Nico Rosberg’s tenure with Lewis Hamilton when George Russell joins the team to compete with Hamilton next year.
Ambitious Briton Russell will leave Williams at the end of the season to join Mercedes, and compete alongside seven-time Formula One world champion Hamilton. When Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013, he was in tense conflicts with German Rosberg, which damaged the team.

Hamilton has dominated the world title since 2014, with the exception of 2016, when Rosberg was crowned.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said: “George Russell has proven that he is worthy of competing with a top-class car, and now we need him to adapt properly to the situation at Mercedes.”

He added: “He will face much more pressure, he will have an amazing colleague with the best records, and it is important that you adapt him and evaluate him correctly.”

“We’ve seen situations in the past that have failed. Lewis was involved in one of those situations, and I think the team didn’t quite understand then how things could go, and I think we’re probably a bit better prepared now to deal with this situation.”

Hamilton is currently in a strong competition with Max Verstappen, a Red Bull driver, to win the world title, which continues with the Russian Grand Prix next Sunday.
