iKON’s leader was given a suspended prison sentence for drug use

SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Yonhap) — Friday handed a suspended sentence to the leader of K-pop group iKON for drug use.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Kim Han-bin, better known by his stage name BI, to three years in prison, with a four-year suspended sentence. He was sentenced to 80 hours of performing social services and completing 40 hours of substance abuse treatment sessions.

“He committed the crimes not only out of curiosity. Drug-related crimes committed by a celebrity have a significant impact on society by making citizens, especially young people, less alert to the dangers of illegal drug use,” the court said.

But she noted that the 25-year-old artist showed remorse and his family members said they would support him to overcome the problem.

PI was accused of buying illegal drugs, including marijuana and LSD, through an acquaintance in April and May 2016 and using some of them himself, in violation of the anti-drug law.

In his final statement to the court last month, he asked for leniency, and asked the court to give him another chance.

“I will try to become someone who can be forgiven,” B.I. said on Friday.

He did not answer questions about his future musical plans. He released an album in March and was recently featured in the singer’s single “Lee Ha Ee”.

The scandal led to Yang Hyuk-suk’s resignation as CEO of YG Entertainment, which runs the business of iKON as well as some major pop groups like Black Pink. B.I. also left the group after the scandal and his contract with YG Entertainment expired.
