The US Food and Drug Administration has allowed booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine and BioNTech to people 65 and older and other Americans at risk, in line with recommendations made Friday by the Principal Vaccine Advisory Committee.

The FDA’s decision comes after an agency meeting that lasted more than eight hours on Friday where a panel of outside experts discussed and voted on the Pfizer app to offer booster doses to the general public.

The agency’s Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products voted 16-2 against distributing the vaccines to Americans 16 and older, before unanimously adopting an alternative plan to give the boosters to older Americans and people at risk of severe disease if they get the virus.
