Organic foods are usually good for the environment, but they are often heavy on your wallet, as these crops cost 20% more than traditional products, according to a study published by the American medical website WebMed.

“Sometimes the difference in cost is much greater, especially for foods like organic milk and eggs,” the study said.

“But are these foods worth the extra expense?” she asked, then answered, “In some cases yes, organic foods may reduce your exposure to chemicals and artificial ingredients, and in other cases it may not be healthier than buying conventionally grown produce.”

organic meaning

The term refers to the way food is grown, handled and processed with the aim of protecting the environment. Governments set strict standards for such products as they must be grown without the use of most conventional pesticides, fertilizers that are not naturally made, sewage residues, radiation and genetically modified organisms. Animals cannot be given antibiotics or hormones.

Livestock raised on non-organic farms are often given sex hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, so they will grow faster.

Some experts believe that these hormones may trigger early puberty in girls while others argue that they have no effect.

Some families buy organic meat for this reason. Some research shows that they may contain heart-healthy omega-3 fats. But more studies are needed.

Organic poultry is given foods that are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They also don’t get antibiotics, a common practice on traditional farms.

Experts agree that regular use of these medications can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

And if you’re buying conventional meat, remove the fat and skin because that’s where the pesticides hide.

“Microwave Popcorn”

For many years, many bags of microwave popcorn have used PFOA to prevent the granules from sticking. After it was linked to some types of cancer, it was banned by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.

But scientists are concerned that the chemicals used in their place may not be safe either. Furthermore, research shows that a component of artificial butter may lead to breathing problems.

sea food

The USDA does not have standards for organic seafood. So a piece of fish that is labeled “organic” is not guaranteed to be safer for you or the environment.

They can still contain contaminants so it’s best to shop for fish that are low in mercury, a mineral that can damage your nervous system. Smaller seafood, such as shrimp, salmon, and anchovies, are good bets.

Their thick, bumpy peel protects this creamy fruit, meaning pesticides rarely reach the flesh. In fact, when scientists analyzed 48 types of fruits and vegetables, they found that avocados contain the fewest pesticides.

General rule: Products with thicker skins, such as pineapple and watermelon, contain lower levels of pesticides. Just wash it well before slicing.

the strawberry

Strawberries rot easily which is why the crop is sprayed with multiple chemicals, and one analysis showed that a medium strawberry contained 6 different pesticides.

But other research shows that this dose is still much lower than the amount that is dangerous for humans.

The best thing is to find a local farm that does not use pesticides and buy strawberries from there because they will be fresh and may last longer. No matter where you get them, be sure to wash them before eating them.

apples and peaches

The peel of this sweet fruit is eaten, which means that you get any insecticide stuck to the peel. Scrub it under running water for at least 30 seconds, but there’s no need for soap or fruit wash.

As with strawberries, it is smart to buy this fruit from local farms that use a minimum amount of pesticides.

spinach and kale

These vegetables are usually high in pesticides. If you can, buy them at your local farmers market where you can be sure they’ve been grown without artificial chemicals.

If you cook these vegetables, it may lower the level of pesticides, but it may also get rid of some nutrients.

Root vegetables can absorb pesticides and fertilizers added to the soil. So conventional and organic potatoes may contain chemicals.

And since Americans eat a lot of potatoes — an average of 114 pounds per person — it’s safer to choose locally grown ones that are known to not be treated with much chemicals. And again, be sure to wash it.
