Barcelona coach, Ronald Koeman, comments for the first time on Lionel Messi’s departure from the team.
Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman commented for the first time on the departure of Argentine striker Lionel Messi from the team after the failure of negotiations for a new contract.
The Catalan club’s administration tried to keep Messi, but the “harsh” financial conditions imposed by the Spanish Football Association prevented a positive result, ending with Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Dutch coach said in a press statement: “I knew the difficult situation between the club, Leo Messi and La Liga, in order to keep Messi in the club.”
He added: “It took a long time, I was surprised by the day and the moment I heard the end of his career with the club, I know that the financial situation of the team made it more difficult.”
He continued: “We were all disappointed that he will not play with us this season, but, well, you have to get rid of the feeling of surprise quickly with the start of the new season, and you have to understand that it was a difficult situation for days, Messi meant a lot to the club.”
