The combination of these observations and data from the ALMA telescope allowed the team to shed new light on what stimulates gas clouds for star formation.
Astronomers know that stars are born in clouds of gas, but what generates star formation, and how galaxies play out, remains a mystery.
Scientists have discovered 30,000 warm gas nebulae across 15 million spectrums, and 100,000 cold gas regions in 90 nearby galaxies to create a picture of star formation.
Scientists hope that future teams can use this data to learn more about how stars of all sizes form and use the gas for growth.
A team of researchers from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, along with other members of ESO, scanned galaxies for “star birth” to generate this data.

“For the first time we are solving individual units of star formation over a wide range of locations and environments in a sample that is well representative of different types of galaxies,” says Eric Emsellem, an astronomer at ESO in Germany.
“We can directly observe the gas that generates stars, see the same young stars, and witness their evolution through different stages,” he added.
