Syrian Hend Zaza, the youngest athlete to participate in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, was eliminated from the table tennis competition, losing to Austrian Jia Liu 0-4 on Saturday.

The match between 12-year-old Zaza and 39-year-old veteran Gia lasted 24 minutes, ending 4-11, 9-11, 3-11, 5-11 in the preliminary round of the competition.

The unknown Syrian girl, born on January 1, 2009, became the most famous athlete in the country that was torn apart by a ten-year war, when she won the West Asian Championship, snatching her qualification for the Olympics.

Qasioun’s daughter was discovered by coach Adham Jamaan in 2014. Hind loved to spend time with her family, especially with her brother and first muse, Obeida, who had previously won the Syrian Junior Championships.

“We set a plan for India five years ago, and among that plan is that participation in the Tokyo Olympics will be just an honorable participation, and our ambition is to win the medal in 2024” in the Paris Games, Jamaan said.
