Weightlifter Hedlin Diaz won the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal on Monday, winning the women’s 55kg event, also setting an Olympic record with a total of 224kg.

On Diaz’s official Instagram account, she posted videos of her training during the coronavirus lockdown in December 2020, in which she used broomsticks and makeshift weights to train for the Olympics.

In her comment, Diaz wrote, “Have you ever had this moment? You would do anything just to be able to train and upgrade [مهاراتك], from training with water bottles which eventually turned into bags of water bottles during the lockdown,” she said, adding that she thanks her foundation for supporting her Olympic journey.
