A Tokyo court on Monday sentenced former US special forces soldier Michael Taylor to two years in prison, and his son Peter to one year and 8 months in prison, for helping the former head of Nissan Motors, Carlos Ghosn, escape from Japan.

Carlos Ghosn was facing accusations of financial irregularities, but he managed to escape from his prison in Japan and return to his country of Lebanon, where the government does not have an extradition agreement with Japan.

Taylor and his son pleaded guilty and apologized to the court last month, saying they “regretted” their role in smuggling Ghosn from Japan, hiding in a box on a private plane that took off from Kansai Airport, Reuters reported.
