The German Olympic Federation has chosen beach volleyball player Laura Ludwig and diving player Patrick Hausding to raise the German flag at the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

Ludwig, the gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Hausding, a two-time Olympic medalist, topped the vote by the German Olympic Association and its media partners.

The Tokyo Olympics became the first Olympic Games in which a man and a woman participated in carrying the flags of the participating countries, in light of the International Olympic Committee’s efforts to promote gender equality.

In the past, a man or a woman was chosen to carry the flags of the participating countries.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics will be held tomorrow, Friday, without the presence of fans, in light of the restrictions to combat the emerging Corona virus, and most of the competitions are held behind closed doors.
