A Turkish company submits an application for oil exploration in the eastern Mediterranean

The Turkish Ministry of Energy said in a statement published in the Official Gazette today, Friday, that the Turkish state-owned energy company, TPAO, has submitted an application for a license to explore for crude oil in the eastern Mediterranean.

According to the Turkish map database, the three areas in which TPAO plans to carry out drilling operations are located in the Turkish territorial waters off the coast of Salfkieh in Mersin province.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last week that Turkey will explore for oil and gas in the eastern Mediterranean In comments that may renew tension with the European Union and Greece in light of efforts to repair the tense relations between them.

Turkey is at odds with EU member Greece and Cyprus over energy resources and sovereignty over the region, and a state of tension erupted last year when Turkish and Greek navy frigates escorted oil and gas exploration ships.
