Olympic champions at the Tokyo Olympics, which start next week, can forget about hanging their medals around their necks as they stand on the podium, shake hands with VIPs and enjoy their success.

Instead, the three medals will be presented on a tray to the athletes on the podium and have to hang them around their necks in front of the empty stands. There will also be no handshakes or hugs.

“The medals will not be hung on the necks. They will be presented to the athletes on a tray and the athlete will receive the medal himself,” International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said during a virtual roundtable with the media on Wednesday.

He added, “It will be ensured that the person who places the medal on the tray does so with disinfected gloves. Medal presenters and athletes will wear masks. There will be no handshakes or hugs during the ceremony.”

The host city, which is under a state of emergency that will continue after the Games, recorded 1,149 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest daily number of infections in nearly six months.

The Olympics have lost much public support amid fears it will lead to a spike in injuries even though spectators are not allowed into sports facilities, and strict hygiene measures are in place for all participants in the Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, postponed for a year due to the Corona virus, will start on July 23 and conclude on August 8.
