Here, Ron Millo, a professor in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science, who is involved in the study, said, “We are talking here about a very small mass of viruses, and they are wreaking havoc on the world.”To calculate the amount of virus that each infected person can carry, the researchers relied on measuring the amount of “SARS-CoV-2” virus in various human tissues known to be more susceptible than others to the virus, including the lungs, tonsils, lymph nodes, and the digestive system.

Analyzing these numbers allowed the team to better understand what happens in the body during infection, such as the number of infected cells and how the number of virus particles in the body compares to how quickly the virus develops, Milo said.

Milo stated that people who have few particles of the virus are “less at risk of transmitting infection to others,” noting that it is not yet clear the reasons that lead to this difference in the rate of spread of the virus within tissues.
