Experts recommend taking water-soluble vitamins first thing in the morning, as some studies have shown that B vitamins affect sleep.
Take any fat-soluble vitamins with a snack
The fat-soluble vitamins are stored in fat cells as they are absorbed, and many of the foods we eat — especially fruits and vegetables — are full of vitamins A, E and K, so most of us don’t need those supplements. Furthermore, taking large doses of fat-soluble vitamins can be toxic to your body. For people who need to take fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D, it is best to take them with food.
Decide when to take your multivitamin around meals
Multivitamins contain a mixture of water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins, such as iron, copper and calcium. The intake of minerals can vary – some are OK on an empty stomach, while others are recommended to be taken with food to avoid digestive upsets. Given that multivitamins contain both water-soluble vitamins and fat-soluble vitamins and minerals, taking them with a meal will increase the likelihood that you will absorb the fat-soluble vitamins and minerals.
