The Italian national team continued its winning streak in the European Football Championship, after beating its Welsh counterpart 1-0 on Sunday in the third (last) round of the first group in the group stage of the European Cup “Euro 2020”.
Italy owes this victory to Matteo Pesina, who scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute, before Wales played with ten men after Ethan Ampadio was sent off in the 56th minute.
Thus, the Italian national team, the champions of the 1968 competition, maintained its unbeaten record for the 30th match in a row, equaling the longest unbeaten streak in its history during the period between 1935 and 1939 under the leadership of the late coach Vittorio Pozzo.
Italy, which qualified for the playoffs since the last round, led the group with 9 points, achieving the full mark, after winning all three of its matches in the group, five points ahead of Wales, who accompanied it to the round of 16.
Wales outperformed the Swiss team, third-placed, with the same balance, to wait for the results of the other five groups, to know their fate in being among the top four third-placed teams qualified for the next round, while the Turkish team is bottom of the standings without points. Leave the contest early.
