The Canadian team was crowned the world ice hockey champion today, Sunday, after defeating its Finnish counterpart 3-2 in the final after an extension after the end of the regular time of the match with a 2-2 draw. And the original time of the match ended with two goals for each team, to decide a tiebreak that Canada decided with a golden goal.
In the match to determine the third place, the US team defeated Germany 6-1 to win its fourth bronze medal in the last eight world championships. Canada raised its tally in the Ice Hockey World Championships to 27 gold medals, with the Russian team participating in the lead (Russia 5 times and the Soviet Union 22 times), while the Czech team (with Czechoslovakia titles) comes in third place with 12 crowns, followed by the Swedish team with 11 crowns.
The Latvian capital, Riga, will host the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championships from May 21 to June 6.
