Pfizer and its German partner Piontech said today that they have agreed to provide the US government with 500 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to donate to poor countries over the next two years.
The two drug companies will provide 200 million doses in 2021 and 300 million doses in the first half of 2022, which the United States will then distribute to 92 low-income countries and the African Union.
The doses, which will be produced at Pfizer’s production sites in the United States, will be made available at a not-for-profit price.
Delivery of 200 million doses will start in August 2021 and continue through the remainder of the year, while 300 million doses are scheduled for 2022 between January and the end of June. The US government also has the option of additional doses.
The two companies said the doses are part of a previously announced pledge to provide 2 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to low- and middle-income countries over the next 18 months.
