Scientists find traces of tectonic processes on Venus

Planetary scientists found in surface images Venus On traces of unusual deformations of its crust, which indicate the possibility of tectonic processes in the interior of the planet, an article describing this discovery was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to the “RT” website, one of the authors of the scientific research, associate professor at the University of North Carolina Paul Byrne, said: “We discovered on the surface of Venus a previously unknown type of tectonic distortion, which resulted from certain processes taking place in the planet’s crust similar to what happens on the planet’s crust. Earth, and before that we did not find traces of the presence of a flow of matter inside the crust of the planet.”

It is mentioned that Venus arose in conditions almost similar to those of Earth, however, it differs radically from our planet in appearance and structure, there is practically no water, and its super-dense atmosphere consists of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, and it is heated to 462 degrees Celsius, Its almost flat surface is covered with the effects of a relatively recent volcanic eruption.

Computer models of Venus’s climate show that in the distant past it should have been similar to Earth, it should have had lots of water, and the planet’s climate should have been more temperate.

Many scientists assume that all the changes witnessed by Venus occurred due to the absence of tectonic processes that play an important role in the carbon dioxide cycle on our planet.

As confirmed, Paul Byrne and colleagues that tectonic processes can continue on flower surface So far, scientists have reached this conclusion after analyzing the images sent by the radars of the American Magellan probe, which studied the planet between May 1989 and October 1994.

Based on these images, planetary scientists studied the appearance of the slopes of some major volcanoes that erupted in the not too distant past, and Byrne and his team discovered unusual structures that resemble icy debris piles that appear periodically on the surface of Earth’s lakes or seas as a result of the pressure of the ice cap, and these structures originated in Venus As a result of deformation of solidified lava flows.

This discovery surprised scientists a lot, as it may indicate that the crust of Venus, which is claimed to be immobile, compressed and stretched in the not too distant past, while similar lava deposits were observed in different regions of the planet, which indicates the comprehensive nature of the processes that caused the distortion of lava .

The calculations made by scientists indicate that the source of these distortions lies in some forms of tectonic processes associated with the formation of the flow of hot matter in the crust of Venus, and it is not known what materials they participate in, but scientists hope that the space missions that will be sent by NASA and “Ros Cosmos” will help. Russian and European Space Agency to Venus to solve this mystery.
